There are different types of gate wheels for sliding driveway gates. The type of wheels that you need depends on the type of your gate track
and the weight of the gate.
Gate Wheels and The Gate Track
A sliding gate runs along a steel bar which is usually cemented into the ground. This bar can be one of two shapes: either a “V” shape, or round.
There are two common shapes of gate wheels: v-shaped and round. The choice of gate wheels depends on the type of track that they will be running along. If the track is angle-iron, then one uses v-shaped wheels as the edge of the angle iron fits into the groove of the wheel. When the track is made of round bar, round wheels are used. The wheels are designed so that they fit over the rounded steel bar.

The Weight of the gate
The other main factor when choosing gate wheels is the weight of the gate. The wheels must be strong enough to support and also move the gate. It is the diameter of the gate wheel that determines how much weight it can carry. The two commonly-used diameters are: 80mm and 60mm. A 60mm diameter wheel can carry 500kg, while an 80mm diameter wheel can carry 800kg. Driveway gates only need two wheels. You can put bigger wheels on a smaller size gate.

Gate wheels are subject to a large amount of wear and tear. They assist in supporting and moving a large weight and are subjected to all types of weather conditions. So, they will become worn down over time. The main type of maintenance for gate wheels is to keep them clean and free of debris. If there has been a storm, ensure that leaves, soil or gravel has not become lodged along the track or within the wheels. Debris can stop the gate from moving easily and can even stop it from opening and closing entirely. As soon as you have a problem with the movement of a gate, you will put stress on the gate motor
which could then break or may have a shortened life-span.
Check regularly that your gate wheels are in good condition. If they are looking too worn, then it is best to replace them or give us a call to come and assess.
